Would you belieive it ther is another monster 3DTV on the loose, In a time where big things are getting smaller (phones, computers, etc) panasonic unleash a gargantuous 152 inch Full HD 3D TV, using active rather than passive shutter glasses compatible with Panasonic’s plasma technology it is currently being showcased at CES 2011 in Las Vegas.

Super efficient quadruple luminance efficiency technology enables this tv to achieve much higher illuminating speeds which is essential for real time 3D production. it has a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1.

PASSIVE Most of the technology to create a 3D image is integral to the television.

ACTIVE Most of the technology to create a 3D image is integral to the glasses, but these 3D glasses can cost upwards of £100 per pair.

Part of the 3D effect is obtained alternating images for the left and right eye at a so great speed that it surpasses the two dimensions. In order to be able to take advantage of it, you will need special lenses (3D Glasses) that work much better than the the old red and blue glasses of years gone by. They can be a little uncomfortable at first, but it is worth it for the 3D effect. The present reproducers of Blu-ray will not support this technology, but PlayStation 3 will receive updates of Firmware to be able to do it. Then, to enjoy the 3D technology you are going to need some equipment:

1) A Blu-Ray with 3D capabilities or a PlaySation 3, etc)
2) A 3D TV able to show the stereoscopic images
3) The pair of special 3D spectacles
4) Media in 3D (games, films, special TV channels, etc)

The important thing, and what I liked most about 3D television, is not that it appears three dimensional, but the power to perceive the illusion depth. 3D is not intended to surprise or scare the viewer like it was in the first productions of 3D (Jaws 3D for example), but to offer a depth experience. The TV stops being a screen in that the images follow one another, but it becomes a window to a new world of television with volume and depth.

3D TV sets operate in 3D mode (as well regular 2D mode), in conjunction with 3D glasses (LCD shutter glasses). The 3D TV communicates with the 3D glasses and tells them digitally which lens should see the image being currently on display this gives the illusion of seeing a 3D image (stereoscopic image). Most 3D TV sets support HD (DMI 1.4) and a minimum refresh rate of 120 Hz;.
The glasses for this type of 3D TV are also expensive at about £100 a pair and 3D glasses are usually sold separately.
3D TV sets went on sale in the UK department stores 2010. ESPN broadcast over 25 of the World Cup games in 3D.

Samsung which seems to be the market leader with 3D tv’s recently announced that it will be including automatic conversion software – TriDef, developed by DDD – in all of its new 3DTV sets, enabling viewers to instantly “upscale” standard live television into a 3D experience at the push of a button. Panasonic refused to include the software in its 3D sets over quality concerns, claiming the conversion software was second rate and probably needed some kind of post production to enable it to work correctly. In order to benefit from the 3D technology fully, viewers need a Blu-ray player, apart from selected programmes as no 3D TV is currently broadcast in the UK although The current Sky+ HD box is already fully compatible with 3D technology. Sky screened some Premier League football matches in 3D TV in over 1,000 pubs across the UK.
Sky’s upcoming 3D channel will show football, documentaries and films. Unfortunately only a few Blu-ray films are available in 3D at the moment, Alice In Wonderland being one of them although the list is growing.

To recieve the 3D channel with sky you need to upgrade to the full package costing £48.50 per month, going up to £51 in september. I personally don’t feel that this is worth it for 3D television yet

Sky 3D TV was launched October 1st
Nintendo has given UK gamers their first chance to play its latest DS console – the 3DS.

Nintendo is one of the latest companies to issue health warnings about 3d TV technology by warning that children under 6 may have eye difficulties if they play with the console in 3D mode.

In 2010 Sony and Samsung jointly put out warnings about their 3D TV products the fear is that they might cause retarded eye development, trigger epileptic fits or other side effects like altered vision and involuntary movements such as eye or muscle twitching, lesser but still worrying are cramps, convulsions, dizziness and nausea. And of course Pregnant women, the elderly, children and unhealthy people are not immune.

A Samsung spokesman said “Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability.” Sounds like going to the pub but it doesn’t put us off.

I would imagine that a lot of effects are caused by the convincing nature of 3D TV, I guess that seeing someone fall from a building in 3D might give you the same affect in the stomach as a roller coaster does. If 3D perception helps experience things more intensely “good or bad” then it is doing what its meant to do, provide the user with new experiences.

Samsung to offer 32 and 37-inch 3D TVs in 2011

Samsung has announced recently that it will distribute smaller 3D TVs to the market in 2011, The smallest 3D TVs available in the UK are 40 inch (Although, with Nvidia 3d Vision, where depending on your graphics card and screen 22 inches , you can play games in 3D at only 120hz.), but because of the implementation of 200Hz panels it is now possible to reduce screen sizes to 32- and 37-inch.

Samsung recently held a demonstration of its C7000 plasma range and 9000 LED series, during the demo it was reported that Samsung would be releasing smaller 3D TVs in 2011. While Samsung are delighted to offer smaller (cheaper) 3D televisions it argues that when it comes to 3D TV bigger is absolutely better.

How far away should I sit from a 3D TV to get the best effect

For optimum Viewing of 3D TV’s it is recommended that when viewing 3D broadcasts or movies that you sit twice the length of the diameter of the 3DTV you are watching. So with a 50 inch tv you should sit approx 4 metres away!

Panasonic’s 103in 3D plasma (TH103VX200) will be available for sale this year apparently for £70,000, at that price they are not going to sell many and the model could end up being utilised at business and marketing events, but if you are fortunate enough to get one in your living room, then sit back and enjoy because this will hugely impressive, I would hope that the first buyers of this 3D TV will not be using it for Eastenders!!

If your wallet is not so laden with the cash there are smaller alternatives available as Panasonic are currently releasing their 50in and 65in VT20 range of 3D plasma TVs in the UK.

50% of UK’s 3D TV owners watch Sky 3D, is this an achievement?

A statistic revealed recently is that from the approx 140,000 3D TV’s in UK homes half of them will be tuned into sky 3D services, sky would suggest that Sky 3D is a massive success in less than four months since launch

With little competition however this is not such a great achievement, although I’m sure the “staff” at Sky will hail this as an amazing success, while Virgin Media has made a move into this arena it is only sky offering reasonable 3D services, but content always likely to be the pivotal factor when considering your 3D viewing choices.

Since Sky’s 3D launch back in October there has been plenty of media available such as movies, sport and documentaries, so as long as sky can increase the range and availability of 3D programming I can no reason for this to change, It seems sky is the place to be when it comes to 3D broadcasts.

One thing that has been is Sky’s favour is the encouraging sales in 3D television, despite the recession over 140,000 sets have been sold, had this figure been lower sky would have to subsidise this channel until more televisions were sold, alternatively had the recession not happened we could be choosing from more 3D television providers than there are currently, funny how these things work out!!

There may be trouble ahead

There has been some testing of Sky’s 3D service and not all went to plan, when viewed used Panasonic’s Viera plasma set. The TV didn’t recognise it as a 3D signal. so you have to manually select the correct viewing mode on your Sky+HD 1TB box.

Sky and Virgin Media are will be locked into a media battle this year looking to attract consumers over to their own 3D services. 3D TVs have only been available in the UK since early 2010 and Sky have only been broadcasting in 3D since October, Virgin Media recently announced the launch of 3D Movies On Demand – this represents the first digital TV service to bring state of the art 3D straight to our UK TV screens., both companies are improving the technology and providing new content and major advertising campaigns.

Virgin Media’s 3D TV is offering an on-demand pay-per-view basis service. Most of the movies are currently available on-demand through the FilmFlex service from just £4.75 a film: Virgin Media will add more movies over the coming months, and of course when you watch a 3D film on Virgin Media you will be able to view as many times as you want within a 24 hours period.

Europe’s first 3D channel, was launched in October. Using the latest 3D technology , Sky 3D offers the best sports, movies and entertainment in amazing 3D. Sky World HD customers with a 3D TV can watch Sky 3D at no additional cost.

3D TVs of this type accounted for just under a third of all sales of large-screen sets during the Christmas period.

This is all looking good for consumers as it looks like 3D TV is here to stay, the technology may change drastically over the next few years but the concept is here to stay.

While there has been a lot of hype and good previews about 3D TVs, there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering one of these sets and that is is the cost of 3D Glasses.

As 3D TVs don’t come with 3D glasses, you’ll need to buy those separately in order to view the 3D content on the Samsung screen. Samsung’s 3D active glasses can cost as much as £100 per pair. a family of four could layout a lot of extra money to enjoy 3D content on the new TV.

Its seems to me that providing/selling a 3D TV WITHOUT glasses in tantamount to a rip of, imagine when the first remote control tv’s arrived on the market, that you were the television was sold without the remote control and would have to pay a tenth of the price of the TV to buy it

The 3D glasses will be active glasses, not passive type e:g what you get in the cinema . (Active Shutter) LCD lenses in these glasses change from light to dark hundreds of times per second and also communicating wirelessly with the television set. The glasses will also be able to communicate with Samsung-branded Blu-ray players and a Home Theater in Box.
